Leonard Monke, 85 of rural Clitherall died Saturday, November 23, 2013 at the Lake Region Hospital in Fergus Falls.
Leonard Emil Monke was born on May 23, 1928 in Regent, North Dakota the son of Frank and Sophie (Gehner) Monke. He was baptized in Regent and confirmed in Waterville, MN. He graduated from the Waterville High School in 1946, Leonard then continued his education for two years at the University of Minnesota School of Agriculture in St. Paul. He entered the U.S. Army, serving in Korea as a Military Police.
Leonard and Thelma Ukkelberg were married on December 14, 1952 in the Nidaros Lutheran Church of rural Clitherall. After their marriage they lived in Nicollet where Leonard was employed with Minnesota Valley Breeders Association for two years. They moved to rural Underwood where they dairy farmed for thirteen years before moving to Faribault, where Leonard became a district manager for NaChurs Liquid Plant Food and then worked in agricultural sales for 30 years. In 1996, they retired to their present home on West Battle Lake of rural Clitherall. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church, the Battle Lake Lions Club, Sons of Norway in Vining and the Fergus Falls VFW. Leonard enjoyed turkey and deer hunting, mowing lawn, and was an avid reader, liking mainly autobiographies. Leonard and Thelma did a lot of traveling. They were on several cruises, wintering in the south along with traveling around the United States and many overseas countries. He enjoyed family and watching his grandchildren play sports was very important to him. He was a good cheerleader and enjoyed their accomplishments.
He is survived by his wife, Thelma; three children, Nancy Monke of Underwood, Dean (Beth) Monke of Fergus Falls and Mark (Leslie) Winterquist-Monke of Fargo; seven grandchildren, Maia (Gabe) Skarphol of Seoul, Korea, Isaac (Alexis) Lundberg and Luke Monke-Lundberg of Moorhead, Mariah, Anna and Matthew Monke of Fergus Falls, and Madison Winterquist of Fargo; one sister, Norma Pommeranz of Faribault; and by many relatives and friends. Leonard was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Sophie Monke; five brothers, Wilbert, Amos, Earl, Herbert and Arthur Monke; and by one sister, Edna Mittlesteadt.
Memorials are preferred to the First Lutheran Church Building Fund.
Memorial Service: 1:00 pm, Saturday, November 30, 2013 at the First Lutheran Church in Battle Lake
Visitation: Friday from 4 to 7 pm with a Prayer Service at 6:30 pm at the First Lutheran Church.
