LeRoy Therman Nelson, 90, of Dalton, passed away at his home, Thursday, April 18, 2024, under the care of his family, Home Instead and Moments Hospice.
LeRoy was born on February 28, 1934 to Tilford and Amanda (Lien) Nelson. He was raised on a farm in Tordenskjold Township. He was baptized and confirmed into the Christian faith at Ten Mile Lake Lutheran Church, Dalton, MN. He attended School District #20 and graduated from Fergus Falls High School.
On July 13, 1963, he was united in marriage to Mary Jean Jorud at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Dalton, with E.O. Stenson presiding. The couple resided on their farm in Tordenskjold Township raising Registered Holstein cattle. As a young man, he worked as a hired hand for neighboring farmers. He worked at Hansel TV of Dalton in the 1950's, installing TV antennas. He served in the US Army at Fort Leonard Wood, MO from 1957-1958.
LeRoy served as President of the Dalton Co-Op Creamery for 16 years. He also served on the Ten Mile Lake Church Council and was the President of the Ten Mile Lake Cemetery Association. LeRoy was a member of the MN Holstein Friesian Association and was very dedicated to raising his cattle. He thoroughly enjoyed having the lifestyle of a farmer. He enjoyed the companionship of dogs throughout his life. In his free time, LeRoy liked fishing and duck hunting with his family and friends.
LeRoy was preceded in death by his parents, Tilford and Amanda Nelson; sister, Lorraine Newton; brother, Eldon Nelson; brother-in-law Dean Newton.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary Jean; three daughters, Julie Ann (Lance) Wendland of Dalton, Kristi Jo (Paul) Trout of Fergus Falls, Peggy Lynn (Jeff) Copa of Grand Rapids; grandchildren, Noah (Maya Maihori) Wendland of Fergus Falls, Abbie Wendland of Richfield, Emily (Jason) Kopveiler of New York Mills, Derek (Dakotah Hoselton) Trout of Fargo, ND, Annalynn Trout of Fargo, ND, Olivia Trout of Fergus Falls, Lucas Copa of Nashwauk, Aubrie Copa of Grand Rapids; great-grandchildren, Bryce, Nathan, Hailey, and Grant Kopveiler; sister-in-law Karen Nelson; along with numerous nieces, nephews, friends, and his faithful companion Little Boo.
LeRoy’s family would like to thank his care professionals from Home Instead and Moments Hospice.

Funeral will be held Monday, April 22, 2024, at 11 AM at Zion-Sarpsborg Free Lutheran Church, Dalton, MN, with a visitation beginning an hour prior. Burial following the luncheon at Ten Mile Lake Cemetery. Service will be officiated by Pastor Mark Johnson. Arrangements with Glende-Nilson Funeral Homes.
