Loraine Lankow, 87, of Fergus Falls died Friday, June 17, 2011 at her residence.
Loraine Harriet Martinson was born in Rothsay on February 9, 1924 to Hilmer and Ellen (Klengson) Martinson. She grew up and attended school in the Rothsay and the Everdell area until starting high school in Breckenridge, where she was a 1942 graduate. Loraine went through all 12 years of school with perfect attendance and considering the methods of travel at that time, which was quite an accomplishment.
She was confirmed in the Foxhome Lutheran Church in 1934 and remained a member there and at Vukku Lutheran Church for many years. After graduation, she worked at various jobs, including the OPA, St. Peter's Hospital, the Fergus Falls State Hospital, and the café in the bus depot where she learned how to fry steak better than anyone in the world. Loraine joined the navy in October, 1944 and served until July, 1945, at which time she was honorably discharged.
She was united in marriage to Hearman Lankow in September of 1952 and they moved to a farm near Everdell where she helped with the farming and their dairy herd. When Hearman passed away in 1970, Loraine remained on the farm for two more years and then made her home in Fergus Falls. She moved to an apartment at Riverview Heights in 1991 and was still living there, independent and proud of it.
Loraine is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, LuAnn and Ed Canepa, her son, Michael; two sisters, Virginia (Francis) Lankow, and Janice Michels; three brothers, Alwyn (Marilyn), Gordon (Artis), and Donald (Richadeene); and numerous nieces and nephews along with their children. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hearman; her daughter, Lynnette; her parents, Hilmer and Ellen Martinson, brothers, Ellsworth, Oline, and Conrad, her sister, Miriam Shelstad; two brother-in-laws, Juel Shelstad and Kal Michels, and two sisters-in-law, Joyce Martinson and Wanda Martinson.
Memorials are preferred to the American Heart Association.
