Lorraine Simons, 91 of Fergus Falls died Tuesday, October 18, 2011 at the Pioneer Care Center.
Lorraine Junette Simons was born February 7, 1920, the daughter of Benjamin and Lillian (Bisek) Benson in the Benson Family farm house by New Effington, South Dakota. She was baptized and confirmed in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Lorraine attended the New Effington Public School, graduating from the high school in 1938, then continued her education with eight months of nurses training in Aberdeen, SD.
Lorraine married her high school sweetheart, Glendon Simons on January 24, 1946 in Breckenridge, Minnesota. They lived a short time in Breckenridge before moving to Fergus Falls where Lorraine was a homemaker and lovingly raised her family. She was the neighborhood "Mom" and would hand treats through the window as the neighbor kids would skate in the backyard ice rink. Lorraine was camp fire leader and room mother at her daughters' schools. She was a lifetime member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Lorraine worked for the Chamber of Commerce, Fergus Falls Senior Citizens, and the Center for the Arts. She was an Avon representative retiring at age 86. She enjoyed gardening, was a hospitality hostess for different local functions, was founder of the Dizzy Dames Senior Citizens Kitchen Band which she was part of for many years. Lorraine was an active member of Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church, the Catholic Daughters, and the St Robert's and St. Theresa's Mission Circles. Church was very important to her. She was a Lay Minister in the parish at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church, past trustee, and past first Vice Regent of Catholic Daughters. Lorraine was blessed to be able to journey to Iowa to see Pope John Paul II. She dedicated many hours of volunteer work to various organizations in Fergus Falls. Her most endearing quality was her kind and loving spirit.
She is survived by daughters, Michelle (John) Lindquist of Dalton, Renee (Brad) Irwin of Aitkin; grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Benjamin (Missy) Lindquist, Rylee, Rowdie and Rorey, of Perham, Jason (Christina) Lindquist, Colton and Brady of Ashby, and Molly Irwin of Duluth; sister, Genevieve (Hugh) Salisbury of St. Paul; nieces and nephew, Maria (Bob) Knutson of Dayton, Missy (Bill) Kneip of Mahtomedi, Jane Moore of Grand Forks, ND, Joel (Pat) Simons of Fargo and Julie (Al) Lucht of Anchorage, AL; and great nieces, nephews and friends.
Lorraine is preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Glendon on November 16, 1974; her father-in-law and mother in-law, Hans and Julia Simons; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Dennis and Bea Simons.
Funeral Mass: 11 AM, Saturday, October 22, 2011 at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church, Fergus Falls
Visitation: 4-7 PM, Friday, with a 7 PM Prayer Service followed by a Rosary at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service on Saturday.
