Marian S. Velek, 84, of Fergus Falls, passed away Tuesday, February 28, 2012, at Lake Region Hospital in Fergus Falls.
Marian Sadie Velek was born December 17, 1927, on the family farm in Rutland, ND, to Walter and Stella (Lind) Nelson. She attended school near Rutland and graduated high school.
Marian worked as a bookkeeper for the Fergus Falls Auction Market, and later continued to work for various businesses around Fergus Falls.
On April 11, 1992, Marian married Victor Velek. Victor passed away June 12, 2007.
Marian had a love for the outdoors, and even up until recently was still active with her chainsaw cutting wood. She enjoyed gardening, especially pegonias, petunias, and lilies. Marian was able to travel to all fifty states, except Hawaii. During her time with Val, they often spent winters in Yoakum, Texas.
Family was also very important to Marian. She always sent birthday cards and would drive across the country to attend family weddings. Marian was active in "Takeoff Pounds Sensibly", serving as secretary and especially enjoyed social activities with other members as well as a feeling of motivation from fellow group members.
Marian is survived by her sons, Wayne Vallevand of Rosemount, MN and Steven (Betty) Vallevand of Fergus Falls; two step-daughters, Donna and Sandy Velek of Yoakum, TX; three sisters, Shirley Thompson of Grand Forks, ND, Kay (Harry) Erickson of Cedar, MN, aand Sharon (John) Maurer of Fargo, ND; five grandchildren, Cindy (Chris) Ryan, Steve Vallevand Jr., Matthew (fiancée Heather) Vallevand, Chris Vallevand, and Mike (Megan) Vallevand; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Val Velek; an infant sister, Vivian; brothers, Emmeth, Wilmar, Donald, Walter and Clarence Nelson; sisters, Jeanette Busch, Jill Glarum, Betty Erickson, Donna Christianson, Maureen Fulmer, Evenlyn Nelson and Eleanor Kreklau.
Visitation: 3 – 5 PM Sunday, March 4, 2012, at Glende-Nilson Funeral Home, Fergus Falls, and one hour prior to services at church.
Funeral Service: 11 AM Monday, March 5, 2012, at First Lutheran Church, Fergus Falls.
Interment: Oak Grove Cemetery, Fergus Falls
