Marlin Freitag

August 27, 1933 — January 9, 2015

Marlin Herbert Freitag, 81, died January 9th 2015 in Mission Texas after a short illness.

He was born Aug 27, 1933 at the home of his parents, Herbert and Violet (Wendt) Freitag near Deer Creek, MN. He attended several schools in the Deer Creek, Wadena and Verndale area. He was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran church in Deer Creek.

He loved living on the farm and riding his pony. He would ride several miles to visit his grandparents and pick up the newspaper to bring back home. While in Deer Creek in 1953 he married Lila Haffner. In 1955 they moved from Deer Creek to Fergus Falls where he and his father began renting a farm which they later purchased. There he ran a dairy operation and kept several types of livestock. It was also on this farm he raised his 5 sons. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and then transferred to Faith Lutheran Church where he was a trustee. He loved working the land and operating the farm with his family. For a period of time along with his farming he also operated over the road trucks for local trucking companies. During an extremely dry period in the 1970s he purchased his own trucks and began transporting hay from Canada to area farmers with his sons. In 1969 he began a career working at the RTC for 26 years and retired in 1996. In 1979 he purchased a hobby farm North of Fergus Falls. There he raised beefalo and even had annual cattle drives. He loved working the land with his "Red" tractors.

Although he didn't continue to live on the farm he always felt his heart was in it. In 1981 he married Gail Lehn who passed away April 17th, 2001. On Sept 7, 2002 he married Lucy Sorenson and they made their home in Fergus Falls. They took many trips, enjoying Alaska and Hawaii especially. In 2006 they began wintering in Texas where they enjoyed all the activities and playing cards and games with friends.

While in retirement one of his greatest joys was helping his sons and grandchildren with their farming operations. He felt it was his duty to be sure that they always had their equipment ready for haying when "He" felt the fields were ready. Also while in retirement he was very fond of working with Bobby Maack assisting with field work on his sugar beet operation into 2014. He enjoyed his family, watching his grand and great-grandkids grow. He loved to see them in their activities, ballet, concerts, and ball games. He liked the birthday parties and picnic get-togethers.

Marlin is survived by his wife Lucy. His 5 sons and their wives, Michael & Gisele, Jeff and Nancy, Greg and Pat, Joe and Kaarina, and Matt and Dina. 14 grandchildren Sarah, Jake, Leah, Rebekah, Stacy, Shawn, Alisha, Melissa, Tara, Travis, Jared, Jamie, Danielle and Kaleb. 9 great grandchildren Jackson, Jada, Jaron, Violet, Luke, Michael, Donald, Alex, and Joseph. Step children Dave (Jody) Lehn, Lori (Bruce) Kowalski and Jim (Kathy) Lehn and their families, Larry and Geri Sorenson, LeAnn Sorenson, Terry Larson and Ronda Peterson and their families and one brother, Jerry Freitag (special friend, Carolyn Toupin).
