Marlys Englund

Marlys S. Englund, 85, of Hastings, formerly of Fergus Falls and Alexandria, died Thursday, July 2, 2015, at Oak Ridge Assisted Living in Hastings.

Marlys Sedonia Sleen was born on July 30, 1929 in Pelican Rapids, MN, the daughter of Simon and Bessie (Jenson) Sleen. She attended school in Pelican Rapids, graduating from Pelican Rapids High School. Marlys attended the North Dakota State School of Science in Wahpeton for secretarial training, and went to work for Otter Tail Power Company.

Marlys married Donald Englund on June 8, 1951, at Friberg Lutheran Church in Fergus Falls, and they were blessed with four children. In 1974, the family moved to Cincinnati for a year and returned to Buffalo Lake where they lived for one year. In 1975, they moved to Long Prairie where Marlys worked for Banta Press until retiring in 1991. Donald and Marlys moved into the Royal Manor in Alexandria, where they were caretakers. Donald died in 2007, and in 2009, Marlys moved to the Twin Cities to be closer to her family.

Marlys enjoyed playing cards, music, puzzles, gardening, and needlework. Affectionately known as "cookie grandma", Marlys enjoyed making cookies for her grandkids. She was a member of the Eagle's Auxiliary.

She is survived by her children: David (Barbara) Englund of Hudson, Wis., Dale (Beth) Englund of Fergus Falls, Joline (Leland) Moe of Woodbury and Dean (Sandy) Englund of Lakeville; nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren; brother, Ardean (Esther) Sleen of Pelican Rapids; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Marlys is preceded in death by her husband, Donald; and a brother, Lawrence Sleen.

Visitation: One hour prior to services

Memorial Service: 4:00 PM Friday, July 10, 2015, at Glende-Nilson Funeral Home, Fergus Falls

Clergy: Pastor Tom Peterson

Interment: Oak Grove Cemetery, Fergus Falls
