Maxine "Mickie" Herness, 90, of rural Dalton, died Tuesday, April 2, 2013 at Lake Region Hospital.
Maxine Ruth (Arneson) Herness was born September 11, 1922 in Esterville, IA. While still an infant she moved to Minnesota with her parents, Fred and Ruth Arneson, where they settled in the Campbell-Dorn area. It was here she grew to womanhood and then moved to Battle Lake. She worked at Carl Ranstad's restaurant and George Simon Produce where she met her husband George Herness. George and Maxine were married on November 29, 1943. They lived in Eagle Lake Township for a time and then moved to St. Olaf Township. In the fall of 1949, they moved to their home on the north shore of Sewell Lake where the lived the remainder of their lives. It was here they farmed with George's brother, Richard.
Mickie was baptized at the Dalton parsonage by Pastor Norlien. She joined the Bethel Church where she served as officer in various church organizations as well as a Sunday School teacher for many years. She assisted her husband with the farm work, organizing and participating with the "Hill and Valley Riders" Saddle Club, running Sewell Lake Kennels and providing daycare for her grandchildren as well as several children in the area. She enjoyed gardening, canning, sewing, quilting, fine crochet work and visiting with family and friends. She loved her family, especially her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved Bethel Church and her church family.
Mickie is survived by her daughter, Sandra (Dean) Moore of Fergus Falls, her sons: Merle Herness of Dalton and Lamont Herness of Alexandria; grandchildren: Trevor (Korene) Moore of Rothsay, Karri (Corey) Gullickson of Fergus Falls, Letica Herness and Amber Herness both of Sioux City, IA, Samantha (Brian) McGee of Fargo, ND and Spencer (Kayla) Herness of Ft. Eustis, VA; 12 great-grandchildren; two sisters: Betty Ann (James) Spanswick of Ottertail and Muriel (Larry) Tonsager of Wilsonville, OR; sisters-in-law: Selma Alfredson of Battle Lake and Bernice Herness of Fergus Falls and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, George, infant son, George LeRoy, daughter, Carol, great-grandson, Brandon Gullickson, two sisters: Lillian Burhans and Sylvia Tonsager and two brothers: Orville and Fred Arneson.
