Merton Baumgartner

May 11, 1929 — March 4, 2014

Merton Baumgartner, 84 of Amor died Tuesday March 4, 2013 at the Broen Home in Fergus Falls, in the care of Hospice.

Merton Arthur Baumgartner was born May 11th, 1929 in Wrightstown, MN to Arthur and Ella (Homann) Baumgartner. Mert attended school in Wadena, Minnesota. After school he spent some time working in Oregon, in logging and road construction. He started working for Northern Coop in 1949 (which later became Cenex). He drove semi- truck for 39 years, twice earning the million mile award for outstanding driving performance with no accidents.

Mert married Melva Jean Martinson in 1950 in Amor, Minnesota. They lived in Wadena for 10 years before moving to Amor. Mert and Melva were blessed with three children, Kerry (Jane), Cindy (Mike Holstrom) and Kim (Joye). Mert was a proud grandfather to Tyral Holstrom (Amanda), Stacy Holstrom, Kelli Baumgartner, Kyle Baumgartner, Anna Baumgartner, Max Baumgartner and Ella Baumgartner; great-grandchildren, Stella and Claire Holstrom.

Through his life Mert also had a plumbing business, farmed, and worked for many cabin owners in the lakes area, doing the necessary work to open and close their cottages.

Mert spent his retirement years in Amor, continuing his 53 year run as the self-appointed Mayor of Amor. He also made numerous wood working projects for friends, family and charity donations. His retirement employment included working at Lawn and Limb, Amor Pork and mowing ditches for Amor Township. Mert was also a member of Lake County Sportsman's Club. Mert was always there to offer advice, share a good story and his unforgettable chuckle. Mert was always ready for a game of pinochle or cribbage and never passed up the chance to play.

Mert underwent numerous treatments for cancer for 14 years. Melva Jean spent hours taking wonderful care of Mert. We are thankful for her care!

Mert was preceded in death by his parents, in-laws (Edwin and Lillian Martinson), sisters, Joyce Kautzman and Velma Herman. In addition to his immediate family, Mert is survived by his sisters, Donna Ziegler, Ardis Nelson and Elaine (Norman) Haedtke and numerous friends.
