Michael Adolph Henkenius, Sr. (70) of rural Battle Lake passed away Saturday March 4, 2017.
Mike was born on June 9, 1946 in Breckenridge, Minnesota, the son of Adolph and Dorothy (Klosterman) Henkenius. He was baptized and confirmed in the St. Anthony Catholic Church in Mooreton, North Dakota. Mike attended Antelope Consolidated School and graduated from Wyndmere High School in 1964. He continued his education for two years at Wahpeton State School of Science. In 1966, he enlisted into the US Marine Corps and served in Vietnam, being Honorably Discharged as a Sargent. After his discharge, he attended North Dakota State University graduating with an Industrial Engineering Degree.
Mike and Christine O'Leary were married on August 16, 1969 in Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Battle Lake, MN. Throughout their life together they lived in Fargo, ND, Bloomington, MN, West Chester, PA, and returned to Minnesota settling in Eden Prairie. In 2006, Mike and Chris retired to their lake home on West Battle Lake. During his business career, Mike worked for Unisys, Rosemount and the Sinclair Group. Mike enjoyed fishing, hunting, woodworking and painting. He had a profound love of nature in general, loved to take drives and long walks. Mike and Chris enjoyed traveling and exploring new places together. Mike relished his family, especially his grandchildren. He was a dedicated member with Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church and was also very active in the Battle Lake community.
Mike is survived by his wife, Chris; his children Jeffrey (Kristin), Sara Kujawski, Kathryn (Matt), Elizabeth (Bill) McNeill and Michael; his nine grandchildren Morgan, Phoebe, Megan, Murphy, Jackson, William, Levi, Anne, and Jack; and his siblings Carol (Tom), Claudia (Alvin), Rachel (Gary), Mary (Christopher), Carmen (Karl), Kurt (Kathy) . He is preceded in death by his parents, Adolph and Dorothy Henkenius, and his brother Louis Henkenius
Funeral Mass: 11:00 AM, Saturday, March 11, 2017, at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Battle Lake, with visitation one hour prior to the Mass.
