Mike Johnson, 73, of rural Henning died Saturday, August 15, 2015, at his home under the care of Lakeland Hospice.
Michael Owen Johnson was born on April 23, 1942, the son of Cleve and Myrtle (Hoven) Johnson. He was baptized and confirmed in Nidaros Lutheran Church. Mike attended country school in Nidaros Township, graduated from Battle Lake High School in 1960, and then continued his education for two and one-half years at North Dakota State University in Fargo. After college he returned home to farm. He served six years with the Minnesota National Guard.
Mike and Janet (Trett) Johnson were married on January 21, 1967. After their marriage they operated a dairy farm south of Clitherall where they lived until 1988, when they moved to their home in Girard Township. Mike was employed with Ottertail Aggregate for fifteen years until his retirement. He enjoyed John Deere tractors, which he restored and would drive in area parades. Everything was John Deere. Mike even bought John Deere silverware for Jan one year for Christmas. He enjoyed visiting with people, always recognizing everyone. Mike loved teasing his grandchildren along with all kids. He was an avid sports fan, following the Minnesota Twins and Vikings and all the local school teams. He was a lifetime member of the Nidaros Lutheran Church where he had served on the council. He was a member of the Dalton Threshermens Association and had been a member of the Battle Lake Lions Club.
He is survived by his wife, Janet; two daughters, Jana (Byron) Sundbom of Fargo and Julie (Mike) Thompson of Mesa, AZ.; three grandchildren, Sydney and Isaac Thompson, Molly Sundbom; special cousin who was like a brother, Wayne Johnson of Independence, MN and numerous relatives and friends. Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Cleve and Myrtle Johnson.
Funeral Service: 11:00 am Wednesday, August 19, 2015 at Nidaros Lutheran Church of rural Clitherall
Visitation: Tuesday from 5 to 7 pm with a Prayer Service at 7 pm at the Glende-Nilson Funeral Home in Battle Lake. Additional visitation one hour prior at the church on Wednesday.
