Olaf T. "Ole" Hodnefield, age 93 of Battle Lake, passed away Monday, November 14, 2011 in the Battle Lake Good Samaritan Center under the excellent care of the nursing home staff and Lakeland Hospice.
Olaf Trygve Hodnefield was born on August 7, 1918 in Slayton, Minnesota the son of Jacob and Sigred (Brevit) Hodnefield. As a young boy he moved with his family to the Fergus Falls area and then to the Battle Lake area where he spent most of his life. Ole attended Country School by Battle Lake and then the Battle Lake High School graduating in 1938. He served with the U.S. Army, during WW II, as a Radio Repairman serving in North Africa.
Ole and Elaine Sandberg were married on February 21, 1947 in a church north of Battle Lake. They lived in Battle Lake where Ole was employed with Bengston Oil Co. In 1948 he purchased the Service Oil Co. in Battle Lake, which he operated until his retirement in 1984. He enjoyed dancing, Sunday Smorgasbords, after retirement he took up golfing, he did a lot of walking and mowed several lawns. He took pride in his business and enjoyed being with people. Ole was a member of the First Lutheran Church and the American Legion.
He is survived by one son, John (Janene) Hodnefield of Battle Lake; four grandchildren, Melissa (David) Shogren, Jackson and Mallory of Inver Grove Heights, Angela Larson of St. Paul, Kyle Hodnefield of Burnsville and Kristin Hodnefield of Fargo; one sister, Ruth Berglund of Bentonville, Virginia; one brother, Marvin (Stella) Hodnefield of Fergus Falls; and by numerous relatives and friends. Ole was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Elaine; daughter, Diane Larson; two brothers, Elof and John Hodnefield; four sisters, Jennie Parson, Emma Markle, Sigrud Puetz and Gunhild "Gunnie" Applequist.
Memorials preferred to Lakeland Hospice.
Funeral Services: 11 AM, Friday, November 18, 2011 at First Lutheran Church, Battle Lake
Visitation: Thursday from 4 to 7 pm with a Prayer Service at 6:30 pm at the Glende-Nilson Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service.
