Olaf Vernon Nelson, 91, of Rothsay, died Sunday, May 29, 2016, at PioneerCare in Fergus Falls, surrounded by his family and under the care of Lakeland Hospice.
Olaf was born August 12, 1924 at the home farm in rural Oscar Township, the son of Ole and Lena (Sletvold) Nelson. He was baptized and confirmed at Hedemarken Lutheran Church. Olaf attended country school at District 266 and after receiving his education, farmed with his dad. In 1944, he entered the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged in 1946.
He married Clarice Nord on July 9, 1960 at Our Saviors Church in Rothsay. They made their home on the family farm, eventually moving into Rothsay in 2005. Olaf worked various jobs while farming until he retired.
Olaf was a lifetime member of Hedemarken Lutheran Church, serving on the church council. He was also a member of the Elizabeth Sportsman's Club and was a life member of the VFW Post 612 in Fergus Falls. His hobbies include bowling, reading, traveling, and spending time with his family.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Clarice of Rothsay, MN; son, Michael Nelson of Beardsley, MN; son, Richard (Nanette) Nelson of Excelsior, MN and their children, Jeremy and Riley; and daughter, Jodi (Les) LaFayette of Barnesville, MN and their children, Cody and Madison.
Olaf was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.
Memorials are preferred to an organization of the donor's choice, in lieu of flowers.
Visitation: 5 – 7 PM Friday, June 3rd, with a 6:30 PM Prayer Service, at Glende-Nilson Funeral Home, Fergus Falls and one hour prior to services at the church.
