Pastor Ulrich

August 29, 1931 — June 22, 2012

Pastor Carl Ulrich, 80, of Ashby, died Friday, June 22, 2012 at his home under the care of Lakeland Hospice.

Carl Leonard Ulrich was born on August 29, 1931, in Ortonville MN to Leonard and Eleanora Ulrich. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church in Milbank, SD. He graduated from Big Stone City School. Carl was a graduate of St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN and Luther Theological Seminary in St. Paul, MN where he earned a Masters in Divinity.

He and Carol Jean Lundy were married in Sioux City, IA in 1956. They moved from St. Paul to Paris, France in 1957 where they studied French for one year in preparation for their work in Madagascar. Their first child was born there. They sailed for Madagascar in 1958 where they lived and worked for eighteen years. Carl worked as an evangelist and started many churches there. Three more children were born during these years.

In 1975 they moved to South Africa where Carl taught the concept and practice of Biblical Stewardship. He simultaneously held a position with the Lutheran World Federation in the area of Stewardship and Church Economy. During their nine years in Africa, they lived for two years in Botswana on a task of peace-making in a divided church.

In 1984 they returned to the US, and Carl was called to minister at Trinity Lutheran and Grue Lutheran Churches in Ashby, MN in 1985. He was instrumental in merging the two ELCA congregations, Trinity and Pelican Lake, into one congregation, Peace Lutheran Church. Erdahl Lutheran Church was a part of this parish also.

He then served as a part-time pastor at Christina Lake Lutheran Church in rural Evansville for seven years. After retirement he did supply preaching for local congregations for a few years.

Carl loved his work very much, both overseas and locally, having been called to mission work at age 9. He truly loved his people, and his love for his Lord Jesus was paramount in his life.

Carl loved being with his family, children and grand-children and his many friends all over the world. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, stamp and coin collecting, and was an avid reader.

He is survived by his wife Carol, his children Tamar (Bruce DeJong), Katrina, Robert, and Sharon (Grant English), nine grandchildren, Terah, Johann, Hans, Ketsa, Cecilia, Zoe, Lily, Leif, and Andry, two brothers, Ralph (Gloria) and Darold, and one sister, Carol (Gary) Johnson, and his two faithful canine companions, Rupert and Clarabelle.

He was preceded in death by an infant sister, Loretta Ulrich, a Sister-in-law, Donna, and his parents.

Carl went on to his heavenly home on June 22, 2012, in his home in Ashby. He will be sorely missed.
