Charles William Ewan, 87, of Fergus Falls, MN, died on Thursday, November 28, 2024, at Lake Region Healthcare in Fergus Falls.
Charles William was born on January 8, 1937, in Fargo, ND, to Charles L. and Mary Ewan, at the home of the midwife, on the corner of 10th St. and 9th Ave. South. He attended Hawthorne Grade School, Agassiz Junior High School, and graduated from Fargo Central High School in 1954. Charles attended Bob Jones University for 1 ½ years, after which the labor market called. He worked at a number of different jobs for a few years, including being introduced to the ministry of Christian radio at KFNW in Fargo, where he worked for two years. Chuck went on to attend Bible School at Lutheran Brethren Schools, after which he finished college at Moorhead State University in Moorhead, graduating in 1965.
Chuck’s seminary education began in January of 1966. It was while there, fortuitously, that he met the love of his life, Marilyn Lund of Alamo, ND, who was working as an RN in Minot, ND. The couple met in March, were engaged in June and married on October 28, 1966. Seminary was interrupted by a call to serve at the Christian Radio Station in Minot, ND. The couple moved to Minot in the early spring of 1967 and he spent 12 years serving in several different capacities at the station.
In the Spring of 1982, Chuck received a call from Inspiration Lutheran Brethren Church in Wahpeton, ND, a call that gave him the opportunity to be back at Seminary to continue preparation for parish ministry. Chuck served there for 6 years, the first 3 of which were as a part time pastor and a part time student. He graduated from Lutheran Brethren Seminary in 1985.
In June of 1988, the family was called to serve Bunker Hill Lutheran Church in Princeton, NJ, where he served for 13 ½ years. The couple returned to Fergus Falls in the Fall of 2001, where he had been invited to pastor Swan Lake Lutheran Church, an independent church with close ties to the Lutheran Brethren, where he served for another 12 years.
Full retirement came after serving as an interim Chaplain at Broen Home for about 2 years, and briefly, for Hospice, also for Lutheran Brethren Homes.
Charles is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Marilyn Ewan of Fergus Falls, MN; three children, Marit (Matt) DeKok of Princeton, NJ, John Ewan of Fullerton, CA and Eric (Catherine) Ewan of Fergus Falls, MN; nine grandchildren, Nicole (Bruce) Shaffer, Amanda DeKok, Sean DeKok, Augusta (John) Vall, Audra (Isaiah) Dorn, Owen Ewan, Thor Ewan, Alexa Ewan and Annika Ewan; along with numerous relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; Charles and Mary Ewan and siblings, Marion Larson and Earl Ewan. God Bless the Memory of Charles “Chuck” Ewan.
