Robert Vipond, age 70, of Rural Battle Lake, died Saturday, December 3, 2011, at his home.
Robert Harold Vipond was born on September 27, 1941 just outside Herman, Minnesota, into the family of Lester and Anna (Miller) Vipond. He was baptized and confirmed in the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Herman and graduated from Herman High School in 1959.
Robert and Sharon Ann Summer were married on June 19, 1965 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Chokio, Minnesota, by Fr. Kramer. They lived briefly in Hoffman before settling in Herman where Bob continued his work as a carpenter with his brother Dale. After owning and operating the Herman Lumber and True Value store for twenty years, they purchased the Battle Lake Dairy Queen. Three years and untold Buster Bars later, Bob returned to carpentry—his true craft—in which he took great pride and from which he never truly retired.
Bob was at his best with a tape measure in-hand, a tool belt around his waist and, most importantly, family at his side and children about his feet. He doted on five grandchildren and two generations of nieces and nephews. His brothers were his best friends and preferred work crew, each supporting the other in building their businesses, homes and families from the ground up.
Bob enjoyed winter spearing and fall road hunting. His Vipond-sized batches of chocolate chip cookies, homemade ice cream and donuts drew rave reviews. And he stood tall amongst fellow congregants of both St. Charles Church in Herman and Our Lady of the Lake Church in Battle Lake.
He is survived by his wife, Sharon Ann; three children, John Harold (Michelle) Vipond of Bloomington, Scott Robert (Sara) Vipond of White Bear Lake, and Sara Ann (Martin Pettersson) Vipond of Duluth; five grandchildren, Ethan, Jack, Luke, Isabel and Oliver; three brothers, Dale (June) Vipond of Alexandria, Les (Ruth) Vipond of Elbow Lake, and Denny (Faye) Vipond of Herman; and by numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Lester and Anna Vipond, daughter Stacy Marie and son Charles Warren, one sister, Mildred Gulbrandson, and by four brothers, Donald, Stanley, Kenneth and Richard.
