Roger Herness

Roger Herness, 71, of Andover, formerly of Ashby, died Monday, April 3, 2017, at J.A. Wedum Hospice Residence in Brooklyn Park.

Roger Raymond Herness was born on October 20, 1945 in Fergus Falls, MN, the son of Gordon and Bernice (Mandler) Herness. He grew up in Ashby, moved with his family to the Iron Range, and returned to Ashby, graduating from Ashby High School in 1964.

Upon graduating, Roger worked for area farmers and worked construction, helping build the school gymnasium in Ashby. Roger moved to the Twin Cities, where he worked as a tool and cutter grinder at Gresen Manufacturing, a job he held for thirty-two years.

On June 10, 1967, Roger married Shirley Ann Ohren at Trinity Lutheran Church in Ashby, and they were blessed with a daughter, Rhonda.

In his spare time, Roger enjoyed snowmobiling, deer hunting, fishing and golfing. Roger and Shirley enjoyed traveling the Midwest and most notably, their trip to Glacier National Park in Montana.

Roger is survived by his wife of 49 years, Shirley of Andover; daughter, Rhonda (Ken Peterson) Herness of Ashby; his mother, Bernice Herness of Fergus Falls; a brother, Glen Herness of Fargo; grandchildren, Brett, Alayna, and Kale; a sister-in-law, Vikki (Gary) Adams of Ashby; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Gordon; sisters-in-law, Ruth Herness and Bonnie Ohren; father and mother-in-law, Webster (Ione) Ohren; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Memorial Service: 3 PM Saturday, April 15, 2017, at Glende-Nilson Funeral Home in Fergus Falls, with visitation one hour prior to services.
