Ruth Bakken Bjorgo, age 87, of Fridley, formerly of Fergus Falls, passed away at Unity Hospital on May 7, 2013, with the love of her family surrounding her.
Ruth Malinda Olson was born on March 10th, 1926 in Maplewood Township, the daughter of Otto and Effie Olson. She graduated from Underwood High School.
On June 24, 1945, Ruth married Arthur Bakken at Hedemarken Lutheran Church. They were married for 42 years, and were blessed with six children. Art and Ruth lived in Fergus Falls, but enjoyed summers at their lake home on Wall Lake. They eventually built a home on Wall Lake and enjoyed fishing, gardening, and the peacefulness of the lake until Art passed away in 1988. Ruth retired as Deputy Auditor from the Ottertail County Courthouse in Fergus Falls.
Ruth was blessed with another marriage on August 1, 1992 to Lewis Bjorgo. They grew up as neighbors in Phelps Mill, and their friendship blossomed to a wonderful life together for 15 years. They traveled together to many 1st Marine Conventions throughout the United States, a trip to Norway, and spent winters as snowbirds in Weslaco, Texas. Lewis passed away in 2007.
She was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Fergus Falls, where she participated in the Ladies Aid group. She volunteered at Lake Region Hospital. Ruth and Art were actively involved with the VFW Post 612. She was a member and past president of the auxiliary. They were also members of the Elks club.
Ruth is survived by daughter Jacki (Bruce) Wanless of Davenport, Florida, son-in-law Ray Murray of Fergus Falls, son Steven (Yvette) Bakken of Lewisburg Tennessee, son Terry (Stef Kasper) Bakken of Battle Lake, and daughter Julie (David) Speller of Blaine, Minnesota; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren; sisters Bette Friedrich and Elda Huffman.
Preceding her in death were her parents Otto and Effie Olson; husbands Arthur Bakken and Lewis Bjorgo; daughter Donna Murray; son Duane Bakken; sisters Gladys Kuryatnik, Eunice Lyngaas, and Olga Shay; brothers Weldon Olson, Otto Olson and Mandus Olson; and great-grandchildren McKayla and Megan Klimek.
Visitation: 3 – 5 PM Sunday, at Glende-Nilson Funeral Home, Fergus Falls and one hour prior to services at the church.
