Scott Nelson

March 29, 1946 — December 3, 2016

Scott J. Nelson, 70, of Evansville, died Saturday, December 3, 2016, at the Evansville Care Campus.

Scott (Scotty) Jeffrey Nelson was born in St. Paul, MN on March 29, 1946 to Wilbur and Florence (Johnson) Nelson. When he was 6 months old, the family moved to Melby, MN, as Wilbur and Florence purchased the Johnson Brothers Store from Florence's father, Victor. In 1955, the family bought the Schwantz Store in Evansville and moved into the home Wilbur was raised in. The home was also built by his father, Allen.

Scotty attended Evansville School and graduated in 1964. He then attended Moorhead State University, where he was a member of the Sigma Tau Gamma fraternity. He graduated in 1969 with a Geography Education major, and a minor in coaching. His freshmen year in college, he pitched a no-hitter for the Dragons. It was in college where he met the then, Virginia (Ginny) Kinney. They were married on September 7, 1968. From 1969-1981, he taught Geography and coached Varsity football and baseball at Blooming Prairie High School. During the summers he took classes at Mankato State University towards his Masters Degree, and was a foreman for a Green Giant Pea Pack.

In 1981 the family moved to Evansville to help Wilbur and Florence run the store. Scotty and Ginny bought the store when Wilbur "retired" in 1987.

Scotty was a member of Faith Lutheran Church for 35 years. He was in choir and a member of Faith Notes quartet. He served on the Alexandria Ducks Unlimited Committee, Evansville City Council, and was President of the Evansville Community Club for 35 years. Scotty was also a member of the Evansville Fire Department for 20 years.

Scotty also coached Brandon-Evansville Charger Football with Doug Alvstad and Dan Olson the year the team went to the Fargo Dome. He also coached the Evansville Bulldogs Baseball team for several years as well.

Scotty loved all sports, but especially those that involved his children and grandchildren. He was a great son, husband, father, grandfather, and friend.
