Shirley Rolandson

September 13, 1932 — October 31, 2015

Shirley Ann Rolandson, 83 of Battle Lake, suddenly passed away on Saturday, October 31, 2015, at her farm home.

Shirley Ann was born to Stanley Roy and Gina Helen (Larson) Jorud on September 13, 1932, in Wrights Memorial Hospital, Fergus Falls. Shirley was named after Shirley Olson Reed who was from Eagle Lake. She was the voice for Minnie Mouse and various other Disney characters. The first few years they lived with grandpa Jorud on his farm near Eagle Lake and mom had many fond memories of living there. Shirley started country school at District 6, her family moved and the next year she started at District 285, then graduated from the Battle Lake High School in 1951. After graduation, she worked at the sanatorium on Otter Tail Lake, and the following school year Shirley completed teachers training in Fergus Falls. She then taught at District 19 for 4 years, District 9 for 2 years and then went to Moorhead Teachers College. After getting a call from Superintendent L E. Wermager she began teaching fifth grade, in the Cleveland School, in Fergus Falls. Shirley taught Sunday School and became Superintendent at Bethel Lutheran Church of rural Battle Lake. She also taught and led the Vacation Bible School programs in Dalton for a group of churches.

Shirley married Edward Glendon Rolandson on August 29, 1959, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Dalton. The next year Paul Edward Rolandson was born. Mom changed from teacher to wife and mother. In 1973, Edward had many health problems and in 1974, Edward and Shirley opened Rolandson Hearing Aid Center which Paul is still operating today. In 1982, Shirley became office manager for Rolandson Computer Center. In 1990, Shirley and Paul started Rolandson's Card and Gift which we ran till we could not be open. Shirley missed very much visiting with the customers. She wrapped thousands of gifts while working at the Card and Gift. Shirley and Paul took care of Edward as his health declined at home.

Shirley worked with Christian Womens Club as area coordinator of Bible studies. She spoke for their organization in many places throughout the midwest and Canada, and enjoyed going to their headquarters in Kansas City, Missouri.

Shirley had a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, reading the bible and praying daily, and spent many hours praying for family and friends. Shirley was re-baptized in Believers Baptism, on Easter Sunday in 1977, at the First Baptist Church in Fergus Falls. She sent out mail and the "Salt and Light" newsletter for years telling others about Jesus Christ. Shirley faithfully watched Rejoice In The Lord TV from Pensacola, FL, Dr. Adrian Rogers, David Jeremiah, David Reagan, Carroll Roberson and Jack Van Impe.

Shirley was a garden enthusiast, having so many gardens that her son had to put in underground watering to keep all watered. Shirley had every color of day lilies imaginable and well over a hundred varieties of Hosta's. She had brought in over 200 pots of geraniums, impatiens and vines for the winter and every window has its fill. Shirley even this year enjoyed putting up wood for the wood boiler. She used her computer thru Friday evening, reading her favorite websites and keeping up with the news. In her early years she enjoyed playing piano and Tenor Saxophone. Shirley was an excellent cook and baker, Mom was giving away bake goods very often.

Mom loved music and with gardening had many "Summer Parties" with day lilies blooming, singing hymns and everyone enjoyed a great lunch. She enjoyed researching family history, hanging clothes on the clothes line and was known to send out numerous cards to those in need of encouragement.

Preceding her in death was her husband Edward; and parents, Stanley and Gina Jorud.

She is survived by a son, Paul Rolandson of Battle Lake; sister, Mary Jean (LeRoy) Nelson of Dalton; three nieces and families, Julie (Lance) Wendland, Noah and Abbie of Dalton, Kristi Sieben of Dalton and Peggy (Jeff) Copa, Lucas and Aubrie of Grand Rapids; and by numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
