Sybil Donelan

Sybil Kathryn Donelan, 70, Battle Lake, MN died August 16, 2013 at her home under the care of her loving family, friends and hospice. She was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in December, 2012. She received compassionate care from Dr. John Tate and the staff at the Cancer Care Center in Fergus Falls, MN and admirably navigated the end of her life.
She was born June 26, 1943 to Paul and Kathryn (Palin) Deutsch. She graduated from Battle Lake High School and continued her education at the University of Minnesota. Sybil received her R.N. diploma from St. Barnabas School of Nursing in Minneapolis. She was married to John Donelan. They lived in Omaha, Fergus Falls, and Battle Lake.
Sybil spent over 40 years in the nursing profession, specializing in long term care. She was a founding member of the Minnesota Directors of Nursing Association and honored by them, her peers, as Director of the Year in 2008. She always had high standards for herself and those around her and enjoyed mentoring other nurses to achieve excellence in their profession. The well being of the residents in her care was always the guiding principle for her and her staff. She was employed at the Pelican Lake Nursing Home in Ashby, MN for 15 years, before moving to Cambridge, MN to serve as the Director of Nurses at GracePointe Crossing. She retired from there in 2009 and returned to live at her childhood home on Clitherall Lake.
Sybil proudly lived the lessons learned on her family farm of hard work and appreciation of nature entwined with a joy of living fully. She loved collecting Red Wing pottery, her dog, Twins baseball, walks at Glendalough, fishing, and good times spent cooking and eating with family and friends.
Sybil was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by son, Patrick (Sarah) Donelan of Wayzata, MN and daughter Erin (Pat) O'Brien of St. Bonifacius, MN and grandchildren Lily, James, and Eric Donelan; Maggie, Abby, and Casey O'Brien. Also survived by siblings Cynthia (Jon) Boline, Denver; John Paul (Candy) Deutsch, Anchorage, AK; Gay (Jeff) Stabnow, Battle Lake, MN and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Per her wishes, a private celebration of her life will be held by her family on Clitherall Lake.
