Sylvia Strom, 91, of Fergus Falls, died Tuesday, September 20, 2011, in Broen Memorial Home.
Sylvia (Kilde) Strom was born March 20, 1920, in Fergus Falls, MN to John and Clara (Stigen) Kilde. Sylvia grew up in Fergus Falls, surrounded by a loving family and church community, in addition to many close friends.
Sylvia graduated from Hillcrest Lutheran Academy along with her high school sweetheart, Everald Strom in 1938. Sylvia pursued schooling in preparation for a career in nursing at Fairview Hospital in Minneapolis, MN, graduating in 1941. In addition, after a twenty year absence from nursing, Sylvia pursued re-certification through St. Luke's Hospital in Fargo, ND, receiving her certificate of completion in 1968.
On June 5, 1943, Sylvia married Everald Strom in the gymnasium at Hillcrest Lutheran Academy. Two children were born while Sylvia and Everald lived in Minneapolis, MN, where Everald served Ebenezer Lutheran Brethren Church: Edward in 1950 and David in 1955.
From 1944 - 1968, Sylvia served alongside her husband in several congregations of the Church of the Lutheran Brethren; Staten Island, NY; Minneapolis, MN; Scarsdale, NY; and Moorhead, MN. In June of 1968, Sylvia and Everald moved to Fergus Falls, MN due to Everald assuming the position of President of the CLBA. In the fall of 1968, Sylvia began working as a registered nurse on the medical floor of Lake Region Hospital. Shortly thereafter, she became the assistant head nurse on the day shift, where she worked alongside many wonderful colleagues, who, like herself, were very dedicated professionals.
In 1985, Sylvia retired from nursing and once Everald retired in 1986, moved to Pennsylvania for a period of three years. In 1989, Sylvia and Everald returned to Fergus Falls, building a home in the River Oaks development, which they enjoyed immensely until they moved into the Sheridan House in 2005.
Sylvia will be remembered for her loving and compassionate character, her endless drive to get her work done by the end of the day, her loyalty and support for her nursing colleagues, her heart shaped waffles, her laughter and sense of humor, her love and dedication to her family, and her biblical insight, which developed out of a lifelong love of reading.
On Tuesday, September 20, 2011, Sylvia passed away at the Broen Memorial Home in Fergus Falls, MN at the age of 91 years. We as a family would like to express our heartfelt thanksgiving and gratitude for the wonderful care Mom received while a resident of Alcott Manor and Broen Memorial Home from 2006 until her passing. If Mom were here today and able to express her professional evaluation on the care she received, she would respond that her caregivers fulfilled their professional calling with honorable distinction.
Sylvia is survived by her sons Edward (Louanne) of Combined Locks, WI, and David (Laurie) of Fergus Falls; sisters Cordelia Trones of Edina, MN and Ardy (Ray) Seaver of Fergus Falls, MN, brother John (Janet) Kilde of Fergus Falls, MN; sister-in-law, Mary Jo Kilde; Five grandchildren Rachel (Samuel) Bass of Kaukana, WI; Erin (Benjamin) Krueger of Appleton, WI; Amy Jo Greiner of Phoenix, AZ; Evan and Katharine Strom of Fergus Falls, MN: Six great grandchildren; Collin, Megan, and Kaelinn Krueger of Appleton, WI; and Iris, Ian, and Tommy Bass of Kaukana, WI.
