Telford Weggeland

June 10, 1916 — January 23, 2012

Telford Julian Weggeland, 95, of Fergus Falls, died Monday, January 23, 2012, at the Lake Region Hospital in Fergus Falls.

He was born June 10, 1916, in the Fergus Falls rural township of Aurdal to Peder and Inga (Bergrud) Weggeland. He was baptized and confirmed at Vang Lutheran Church northeast of Fergus Falls. He attended eight years of school in Friberg Township at School District #66. He was a member of Vang Lutheran Church for 55 years until it burned down in 1971. He joined the Zion Lutheran Church of Fergus Falls in March 1972 and has been a member there until his death.

Telford lived and farmed on Aurdal property purchased by his grandparents in the mid 1880's. As an only child, he was a very important working member of the Weggeland farm family for over seven decades. He often talked about the joy of having his grandparents living with him and his parents until they passed away in the 1950's. As a young man on the farm he took great pride in working and caring for his father's team of horses. Telford's family often had people temporally staying with them who had come directly from Norway seeking a new life in America.

He was a devoted companion and life-care advocate for both his grandparents and parents. He supported them to age gracefully and provided love, empathy, and kindness. Following the death of his parents in the 1970's, he continued to farm alone until he sold the farm in 1987 and moved to Fergus Falls. The Weggelands owned their family farm for 101 years. Telford had the reputation for having a very neat and well-groomed farmyard, described by many as "looking like a park." He believed his pride and devotion to the farm was just an extension of his parents' caring attitude.

He was a devote Christian and a student of the Bible having read it from cover to cover numerous times. After moving to Fergus Falls, he stayed physically active by walking miles each week, preforming summer lawn care, and removing winter snow well into his 90's.

He will be remembered and missed by many for his strong Christian faith, compassion, sincerity, and generosity.

He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Telford is survived by cousins Irene Bergrud, Walter Bergrud, and Lorraine Schulz, all of Fergus Falls.
