Vernon Ostrom 78, of rural Evansville, died Monday, February 18, 2013, at his home.
Vernon Peter Ostrom was born on September 29, 1934 in Evansville, Minnesota, the son of Carl and Alice (Peterson) Ostrom. He grew up and attended school in Evansville, graduating from Evansville High School.
Vern went on to attend college at Gustavus Adolphus, and received his Bachelors degree. Upon graduation and the death of his father in 1954, Vern returned to Evansville to take over the family hardware business, Ostrom Hardware, a business started by his grandfather Aaron Ostrom in 1905 and then taken over by his father Carl during the 1930's. For most of his life, Vern ran the hardware store, eventually selling snowmobiles and motorcycles as well. Vern sold the family business in the mid 1990's. Vernon continued to live in Evansville throughout his life.
He was instrumental in starting the clay shooting range outside of Dalton, and later went on to open Shooting Sports Outlet in Parkers Prairie, Minnesota. Vern eventually moved on to Glenwood where he had Minnewaska Sports World, and most recently, owned Sports World in Parkers Prairie.
Vern's passions in life were his hunting dogs, the Pioneer Heritage Conservation Trust, waterfowl and hunting. He was known for his efforts in waterfowl conservation, especially pertaining to ducks and geese.
Vernon is survived by his brother, Jerry of New Brighton, MN; nieces: Suzanne (Michael) Berndt) of Eden Prairie, MN and Jennifer (Hong-Ming) Liang of Duluth, MN; and great-niece and nephews: Reid, Paige and Craig.
In addition to his parents, Vernon was preceded in death by a sister in infancy.
Memorial Service: 1 PM Saturday, February 23, 2013, at Faith Lutheran Church, Evansville
Visitation: One hour prior to services at the church
Interment: Mount Grove Cemetery, Evansville
