Weldon Henderson

Weldon "Pug" Henderson, 80, of Underwood died Saturday, December 10, 2011, at Kindred Hospital in Fargo.
Weldon L. "Pug" Henderson was born May 21, 1931, at Foxhome the son of Leo "Blackie" and Ruth (Houghtaling) Henderson. He was baptized in the Foxhome Lutheran Church and attended school at Foxhome and Breckenridge. When the family moved in 1943, he stayed in Foxhome and lived his teenage years with Cordie Henderson and girls.
Pug served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. On June 6, 1953, he married Ruby J. Olson of Fergus Falls at the Assembly of God Church. Pug worked as a laborer-railroad man, electrical lineman, truck driver, cement finisher and ended his working days as a bridge foreman for Arcon Construction Company. He retired after 34 years with Arcon.
Pug was a past commander of the American Legion Post 489 of Underwood and a life member of the VFW Post 612 of Fergus Falls. He was also a retired member of the Underwood Fire Department and the Cement Finishers Local 633 of Minneapolis. Pug also was a certified firearms instructor and had served on the Sverdrup Church Council.
Pug loved hunting, fishing, trapping and anything to do with the outdoors. He did some baseball umpiring and enjoyed being around kids. He took special pride in his granddaughters and great-grandsons. He especially enjoyed taking "the boys" fishing and on other outings. For the past several years he served as a volunteer at the Fergus Falls Veteran's Home. As a proud veteran, Pug felt an obligation to give time to others who had served their country.
Pug was an avid reader all of his life and he shared the peaks and valleys of Minnesota sports. Pug was a good friend and wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
He is survived by his wife, Ruby of Underwood; son, Greg (Marla) Henderson of Yankton, SD; daughter, DeEtt Henderson of Fargo, ND; granddaughters, Bridget and Leslie Henderson and Kelsey Piekarski; two great-grandsons, Carter and Preston; brothers, Robert (Sonja) Shannon of Hermosa, SD, Ron Henderson of Underwood and Bernard "Fibber" (Joan) Henderson of Audubon, MN; sisters, Joyce (Robert E.) Lee of Moorhead, MN and Leat Mohs of Fargo, ND; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leo "Blackie and Ruth Henderson; a son, Jeffrey John Henderson and a grandson, Paul Weldon Henderson.
Visitation: Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at the funeral home
and one hour prior to the service at the church
Service: 11 a.m. Wednesday at Sverdrup Lutheran Church, Underwood
