Wesley Nelson

November 8, 1930 — October 15, 2015

Wesley Nelson, 84, of Ashby, MN, died on Thursday, October 15, 2015, at Lake Region Healthcare in Fergus Falls.

Wesley Dwaine Nelson was born on November 8, 1930 to Clarence and Agnes (Elberling) Nelson. He was the youngest of eight children to grow up on the family farm three miles west of Ashby.
He graduated from Ashby High School in 1948 and went to work at Armour Meat Packing in West Fargo. In 1950 he joined many of his siblings in Michigan, but returned a few years later. He worked at Bredahl Implement in Pelican Rapids and later at the Ashby Creamery. In 1957 he went to work at North Star Dairy (later Mid-Am) where he worked until his retirement in 1993.

He married Kathryn "Sue" Mavis in 1954, and the couple lived two miles west of Ashby, before moving to Elizabeth in 1959. Kathryn passed away in 1966.

In 1970, he married Sharon Brandt, and they lived in Elizabeth until 2008, when they moved to Ashby. The couple had a daughter, Heidi, in 1971, and a son, Kelly, in 1974.

Wes was active in the community life of Elizabeth, serving as Justice of the Peace in the early years, later two terms as Mayor, as well as serving on the city council and volunteer fire department for many years. He was also an active member of the Fergus Falls Eagles, and later the Fergus Falls Senior Citizens. He enjoyed participating in the Rollag and Dalton Steam Threshers reunions, and loved to go out polka dancing with his wife.

Helping people was always the first priority for Wes, and after his retirement he volunteered at the Pioneer Home, Veterans Home, and Broen Home. He also was a driver for Productive Alternatives. He obtained his Nursing Assistant certification in his 60s so that he could provide more help at the nursing homes.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Agnes, brothers Harry, George and Glen, sisters Mabel, Ethel, Clarice and Vivian, and his wife Kathryn.

He is survived by his wife Sharon Nelson of Ashby, daughter Heidi (Dan) Johnson and granddaughters Emily and Alyssa of Ashby , and son Kelly (Erin Lasley) Nelson of Minneapolis, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
