William John Rix, 91, of Fergus Falls, formerly of Elbow Lake, died on Wednesday, June 3, 2015 at the Minnesota Veterans Home in Fergus Falls.
William John was born on October 18, 1923, in Wilkin County, the son of Lloyd and Jennie (Zimmer) Rix. The family moved to Aastad township in Ottertail County where he attended District 118. He served in the US Army in WWII from 1942 to 1946. He was stationed in Ft. Knox and Ft. Campbell in Kentucky and in Africa, Italy and France where he served faithfully on the 12th Armored Division.
After his honorable military service he returned to the area and started to work for B.K. Soby Construction, Schults and Lindsey Construction and owned City Service for five years in Fergus Falls. William moved to Elbow Lake and owned Rix Olds for a few years before owning John Deere Dealer until 1970 when he started Rix Trucking and owned Massey Ferguson Dealership. He was a member of the Elbow Lake Legion and a lifetime member of the Fergus Falls VFW and the Elks for 52 plus years.
His hobbies included hunting, especially deer, elk and moose. William had a deep passion for flying in which he owned many planes in his days, including a float plane that landed and took off on water.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Jennie; brother, Ervin and sisters, Lucille Lindblom and Pearl Johnson.
He is survived by his two daughters, Alice (Rick) Huber of Phoenix, AZ and Ellen(Mark) Klein of Apache Junction, AZ; a sister, Mable (Dale) Ehnert of New York Mills, MN; three grandsons, Trace (Angel) Klein of Redding, CA, Brock Huber and Chad Huber of Phoenix, AZ, along with numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Graveside Service: 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 9, 2015, at Oak Grove Cemetery in Fergus Falls.
