Wubena "Bena" Larson, 97 of Ashby died Friday, July 29, 2016, at the Barrett Care Center.
Wubena Gertie Larson was born on July 28, 1919, in Pomme De Terre Township, rural Elbow Lake, Minnesota the daughter of John and Anna (Oldenberger) Moerke. She was baptized in Ashby, confirmed in Hjerdahl Lutheran Church and attended Riverside School District #55 both in Pomme De Terre Township. After her schooling Bena helped raise the family and worked at home.
Bena married Lawrence "Nip" Larson on August 10, 1940, in Christ Lutheran Church of rural Elbow Lake. After their marriage they moved to Waterville, Minnesota where they lived for five years, before moving to a farm in Pelican Lake Township by Ashby.
Bena was a homemaker doing a lot of cooking, raising her five boys and she was proud of her family. She worked on the farm where she milked cows, had chickens, geese, gardened both flowers and vegetables and did a lot of canning. Bena enjoyed cross stitching, was very musical and could play the accordion, piano, organ and the harmonica all by ear. Bena and Nip played for many dances. She was a member of the Peace Lutheran Church and the Ladies Aid.
She is survived by four boys, James (Marilyn) Larson of Union, Neb., Richard (Sharon) Larson of Moorhead, Donald (Norma) Larson and David (Dianne) Larson both of Ashby; daughter-in-law, Bridget Larson of Ashby; ten grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; two sisters, Anna Mae Harstad of Elbow Lake and Louise Gislason of Willmar; and by numerous relatives and friends. Bena was preceded in death by her husband Nip; son, Doug Larson; parents, John and Anna Moerke; sister, Gertie; six brothers, John, Fredrick, Frank, William, Benjamin and George Moerke.
Funeral Service: 2:00 PM, Tuesday, August 2, 2016, at Peace Lutheran Church in Ashby, with visitation one hour prior to services at the church.
