Richard Quam

October 7, 1938 — December 3, 2016

Richard Quam, 78, of Fergus Falls, died Saturday, December 3, 2016 at Essentia Health, Fargo, ND.

Richard Dickie Quam was born October 8, 1938 in Fergus Falls to Julian and Esther (Schulz) Quam. He grew up on the family farm settled by his grandfather A.O. Quam in 1879 in Carlisle Township.

He graduated from Fergus Falls High School in 1956. He served two years in the US Army with 1st Armored Division from 1961-1963. He then went back to farming with his two brothers, Ronald and Robert in dairy and hogs.

In 1985 Richard was diagnosed with primary sclerosing cholangitis and on May 21, 1985 Richard underwent a liver transplant at Methodist Hospital in Rochester, MN. He was one of the first from this area to undergo the surgery. It was a gift of life by the grace of God and the generosity of the donor family and the unknown donor. Richard retired from farming in 1994. He then took the first of two road trips with his brother on the Alcan Highway to Alaska and the Yukon.

His hobbies include traveling in the west and raising a big vegetable garden, giving much of the produce away. Richard was an avid reader of world and military history.

Richard was a lifetime member of Trinity Lutheran Church and was baptized and confirmed there. He served on the church council and as an usher and was on the team for getting the grounds for the new church. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 30 and the Heritage Foundation.

Richard is survived by his brothers, Ronald and Stanley (Donna); nephew, Paul (Erin); niece, Karen (Greg Hellen), cousins and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Julian and Esther; and brothers, Robert and Donald.
