Battle Lake

Helen Bengtson, 91 of Battle Lake passed away Monday, July 1, 2019, at the Lake Region Hospital in Fergus Falls, Minnesota.

Helen Josephine Bengtson was born on July 22, 1927, in Leonard, North Dakota.  She was the daughter of Sievert and Ida (Kilde) Breden.  She graduated from the Park Rapids High School in 1945 and furthered her education at the Park Rapids Teachers College, along with two summers at Bemidji State College.  Helen taught in the Amor School and School District #14 in Clitherall Township, both of rural Battle Lake.

Helen was united in marriage to Bennie Bengtson on June 10, 1953, in Park Rapids, Minnesota.  They settled in Battle Lake, where they raised three children.  She enjoyed quilting, reading, puzzles, baking, flowers, and helping Bennie harvest his garden.  Helen was a member of Battle Lake American Legion and Auxiliary for twenty years.  Eagle Lake Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday School and was Sunday School Superintendent for many years.  She especially enjoyed her family and grandchildren.

She is survived by three children, Deonne (Jerry) Fabeck of Duluth,  Brian (Cindy) Bengtson of Grand Rapids, and Cheryl (Jim) Smith of Grand Forks, ND; seven grandchildren, Jennifer (Jacob) Hairrell, Ryan (Trista) Smith, Nicholas (Disa) Fabeck, Chad (Hannah) Smith, Morgan (fiancé, Matt Hartman) Smith, Tyler (Joe) Fuhrman, and Dillon (fiancé, Matt Larson) Bengtson; six great-grandchildren, Bennett, Thomas and Callista Hairrell, Emery and Madden Smith, and Peyton Fabeck; sister, Arlene Norman of Portage, MI; brother, John (Lois) Breden of Randall, MN; and by numerous relatives and friends.  Helen was preceded in death by her husband Bennie on November 14, 2014; brother and sister-in-law, Sidney and Dona Breden; and brother-in-law, Doug Norman.

Memorials preferred to the Eagle Lake Church Scholarship Fund.

Funeral Service: 11:00 AM, Friday, July 12, 2019, at Eagle Lake Lutheran Church of rural Battle Lake with visitation one hour prior to the service.
