Robert Dungay

July 7, 1934 — December 5, 2019

Fergus Falls

Robert (Bob) Luther Dungay passed away on December 5, 2019 at Sanford Hospital in Fargo, North Dakota.

Bob was born on July 7, 1934 in Duluth, Minnesota to Helmi Elvira (Salo) Dungay and Herbert Fasken Dungay. Bob was raised in Peterson, Minnesota, where he graduated from high school in 1953.  He graduated from Luther College in 1956 and earned a master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin - Platteville in 1970. He married JoAnne M. (Monahan) Harrison in 1958. Bob taught History and Driver’s Education at Platteville High School in Platteville, Wisconsin for many years. One of the joys of his life was being a head track coach. He established the Platteville Hillmen Relays in 1967 which continues to be one of the longest running true relay track meets in the state of Wisconsin.

In 1987, Bob moved to Fergus Falls, Minnesota. Bob was instrumental in founding A Place to Belong, a social club that provides support for people recovering from mental illness. He devoted many volunteer hours advocating for mental health services and treatment for those in need. Residing in the central part of town for many years, Bob had been a resident at Mill Street Residence since 2016.

Bob was a lifelong Minnesota Vikings and Twins fan and also enjoyed many summers at Swan Lake. Interests included history and stirring up lively political discussions. He was also known to be a very shrewd shopper around Fergus Falls, and with the help of friends was able to retain some of his most cherished bargains for many years. He also enjoyed the many good-natured conversations that centered around these acquisitions.

His family wishes to extend heartfelt gratitude to the excellent staff at Mill Street Residence, the many doctors and health professionals that cared for him over the years at Lake Region Health Care and Lakeland Mental Health Center, and the compassionate staff and caregivers on the fifth and sixth floors of Sanford Hospital in Fargo, North Dakota. Most especially his family would like to thank the City of Fergus Falls itself who took Dad in when he arrived here in 1987. The people of Fergus Falls helped to give our Dad some of the truly best years of his life.

Survivors include his three children, Dianne Dungay and Robert P. Dungay of Philadelphia and Jody Dungay of Portland, Oregon. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Herbert Dungay, his uncle, Elbert L. Agrimson, his aunts Lempie S. Agrimson, Tyyni Sigurd Kiefer, Ruth Ferris, Ellen Mattson and LaBelle Froy and his Uncle Melvin F. Salo.
